TIME : TRAVELER Concert, Seo Tae-ji and the history of BTS

Seo Tae-ji, born in 1972, is a standout figure in the Korean music scene, known for his roles as a singer, musician, songwriter, and record producer. Nicknamed the “President of Culture,” Seo Taiji and Boys, the group he formed, played a pivotal role in shaping and popularizing Korean pop music (k-pop).

In 2015, a special concert titled TIME: TRAVELER was held to celebrate Seo Tae-ji’s 25-year music career. Notably, BTS participated in this event, despite not being as widely recognized at the time. Seo Tae-ji, recognizing their talent, chose to collaborate with BTS, marking a significant moment in the group’s journey to success.

During the concert, Seo Tae-ji publicly named BTS as his successors in carrying forward the legacy of Korean music. This endorsement was groundbreaking, especially considering the intense competition among music groups to align themselves with Seo Tae-ji’s legacy.

BTS’s performance at the concert included renditions of nine of Seo Tae-ji’s famous songs, further solidifying their bond and mutual respect. This collaboration symbolized a passing of the torch from one generation of Korean music to the next and highlighted BTS’s rising prominence in the industry.
